Here is my favourite track from Drop Logik's new album, Couch Constellations, which is set to be released December 10th on the ever brilliant Cold Busted. Not sure what it's classed as; Funky Electronic Trip-Hop, maybe? Whatever you want to call it, it's amazing, and if you like this then you will love the album.
Bugz in the Attic is a collective of DJs/Producers based in West London, who are prominent in the broken beat scene - the collective includes Orin Walters (Afronaught), Paul Dolby (Seiji), Kaidi Tatham, Daz-I-Kue, Alex Phountzi (Neon Phusion), Cliff Scott, Mark Force, Matt Lord, and Mikey Stirton. The group has a label, BitaSweet Records and also runs its own Co-Op club night at Plastic People in Shoreditch. As well as that, they have released numerous singles, remixes, compilations and their debut album, Back in the Doghouse, which dropped in July 2006. However, their new album, Do What You Wanna, is on a whole other level and is something you should definitely think about picking up if you're into Soulful House, Funk or Break-Beat. Miguel Migs has just released his third album, Outside The Skyline, which is a follow up to his 2007 release, Those Years. The album follows in the footsteps of his two previous releases, bringing together sounds and influences from a wide variety of genres and cultures; in this case, early soul, dub, jazz, reggae, funk, disco and house. As Miguel explains, “I take inspiration from everything around me. Its not about trends or what’s fashionable, its about creative expression, quality, emotion and artistic integrity.” - I love that. Showcasing an extraordinary line up of creative and internationally renowned artists – Migs’ reputation is such that, when it came to recording Outside The Skyline, he was able to pull together some impressive collaborators including original disco diva Evelyn ‘Champagne’ King, reggae legends Capleton, Half-Pint and Freddie McGregor, first lady of musicianship Meshell Ndegeocello, Berlin based singer Georg Levin and bossa nova phenomenon Bebel Gilberto. Below you can hear the stunning track with Miss King and buy what is one of the best House releases of 2011 HERE.
Here are two of my favourite tracks from the first release on a newly formed label called Cold Bites. They are a re-edit, remixes, mash up style label whose releases will be available exclusively at Junodownload - the artists will be taking classics (sometimes hidden gems) and putting a modern day electronic twist on them, whilst still keeping the soulful and funky elements that made them hits all those years ago. Love this, so much. 16th November is the release date.
After bringing you their Dilla cover the other day, here is my favourite track from Balance & The Traveling Sound's new EP, Departure, which you download for free HERE! Their cover of Won't Do was amazing, but the fact that they are producing their own material (of this quality) excites more than anything. They have a ridiculous amount of talent and the effortless fusion of Hip-Hop, Jazz, Soul & Funk without a doubt makes these guys one of my favourite discoveries of 2011.
Here are two of my favourite tracks from the fifth installament of Cold Busted's incredible Street Bangerz series, which has now been taken over by Slabofmisuse. Gramatik was the originator and the man behind the exceptional first three, but after leaving the label Krystian Shek took the reigns and smashed number four - for me though, this effort from the South African beat maker is just as good, if not better than the aforementioned fourth installement. Funky basslines, classic and obscure samples which make for 56 minutes of music that you just can't help but nod your head to. 2011 has been an amazing year for this label thus far, and you can expect a few more top quality releases before we're done. October 25th is the release date.
Here is the funky title track and new single from Azari & III's upcoming debut album, Manic, which is set to be released next month. Been following these boys for a while now, since they appeared from nowhere in 2009, and I'm happy to see the long awaited debut coming together so beautifully. There is also a preview of the super sexy Maceo Plex remix below, which will feature on the singles EP that is available to buy on August 2nd. One of the grooviest and best releases of 2011 so far.
Here is my favourite track from Down To The Bone's new album, The Main Ingredients, which takes the band into double digit territory marking their 10th release and one that takes the band back to its original roots with 10 tracks still steeped in groove, but with a heavy dose of 21st century influence. Three tracks feature the superb vocals of Imaani, who has become well-known figure on the underground soul scene over the past decade, however the other seven are soul infused funk instrumentals that wouldn't sound out of place next to some of the all-time greats of the 70s. Must hear album that you can cop on Amazon NOW!
My favourite track from Akshin Alizadeh's Cold Busted debut, El Gran Duelo, which will be available on August 17th. As with any CB release, the samples are as obscure and spectacular ever (which are mainly Spanish this time round, if you couldn't guess from the title), but this has a lot more funk than usual and is the most enjoyable release to come from the label in a while - 10 tracks of pure Downtempo genius with lots of soul and groove thrown in there for good measure. Those keys make me feel happy about life.
Here is the title track from Toddla T's upcoming album, Watch Me Dance, which features the legendary UK rapper Roots Manuva. T has gone for a much funkier sound on this LP, and I like it, I like it a lot. Another version will be on Manuva's album, but I can't really see it topping this. ENJOY & DANCE!
