Introducing: Doctor P

Doctor P is a name that needs no introduction for any Dubstep fan, but for those who are unaware, he is one of the most loved producers/DJs in the genre and co-founder of the incredible Circus Records. Over the past few years he has released some storming tracks, most notably 'Sweet Shop' & 'Superbad', and has remixed a wide variety of artists, from Plan B to Ed Sheeran. I got chance to catch up with him this week - check out what he had to say after the jump.

1. For those who don't know, who is Doctor P?

Shaun Brockhurst, age 26 from the UK. Music maker etc.

2. When did you decide that you wanted to become a producer/DJ?

I was about 12 when I discovered the world of dance music, but I didn't really understand it at first. I think I got decks when I was about 18. I never really decided that I definitely wanted to be a DJ, it just kind of happened!

3. As a child, what music did your parents' listen to and how did this influence the music you listened to whilst growing up and the music that you are making today?

My house was pretty much devoid of music. We had a small clock radio which was always tuned to a local radio station that played nothing but chart music, so as a child I almost didn't even know music was a thing. The older I got the more I was exposed to different music, and the lack of music in my childhood drove me to seek out lots of new music (when I got Napster!)

4. Many people have said that the new single with Eva Simons has seen you go down more of a commercial route, but how do you see it, and what did you want to achieve with the 'Animal Vegetable Mineral Pt. 1 EP'?

Anyone who would describe that track as 'commercial' doesn't understand the word... It's one of the most brutal tracks I've ever done! It has the vocal section which may appeal to radio etc, but the main section of the track is pure anti-pop. I just wanted to make a good EP of music I was proud of, and hopefully some people would enjoy listening to.

5. You also have a label, Circus Records, which has over the past few years has fast become one of the most well respected and loved Dubstep labels in the world - what has been your main aim with the label and where will you be taking things in the future?

We set out to create a label that released high quality music which would appeal to a wide range of people, but we also wanted it to be hard dancefloor music which was 0% cheesy. We plan to stay true to our original goals, and keep releasing music people can trust to be of a high standard. We also plan to keep throwing good parties!

6. Illegal downloading is at an all-time high in 2012, especially in Electronic music, as we have have seen from the recent news stories surrounding sites like BitTorrent & Pirate Bay - what are your thoughts on the issue generally, and do you see any point in trying to stop it?

I actually think the future is in websites like bandcamp, where people can choose to pay or download for free. I really don't mind if people get my music for free; I have downloaded my fair share of torrents. (Although, nowadays I actually do buy everything!) I understand that people can't always afford it.

7. What can we expect from Doctor P over the next 12 months? More EPs, or maybe a full-length album?

I am currently working on lots of music; I haven't decided exactly how it will be released yet, but it will probably be on EPs. I like the idea of an EP, rather than an album.

8. Finally, in what direction do you see music, and Electronic music in particular, going over the next 5 years?

It's impossible to tell exactly what will happen. However, I believe the days of bland pop music are numbered. People are getting wise to the fact that a lot of pop music is seriously terrible. I think that proper music will take over again in the near future!
