You can see some of his work HERE, and after the jump will find our interview, where you will find out his inspirations, the technique he uses and how Hip-Hop has influenced his work - you can also find Will's latest portrait of me down the bottom. An extremely talented young man.
1. For those who don't know, who is Will Prince?
I am a 20 year old aspiring artist from Carlisle, Cumbria.
2. How did you first get into art and was it something that you've always wanted to do since being a child? If not, what did you want to do?
I think it was just being a kid that got me into art and drawing, I loved to just create my own worlds and characters. Cartoons, Films andComics inspired me. I never really looked at it like I 'm talented at this but when it came to school I wasn't the best academically, Art was always where I felt comfortable. I've known I have always wanted a career being creative so I guess so yeah.
3. Did your mum & dad have any artistic input into helping you choose the path you have chosen?
I wouldn't say they've had a lot of input on the art side but they have definitely supported and encouraged me to work on my craft. I know my grandad painted so maybe I got it from him and my brothers were always drawing all the of the time when they were young too.
4. A lot of your portraits are of Hip-Hop/Rap artists - how does Hip-Hop, and music in general, inspire you and help your creative mind?
I'm probably more passionate about music than art, I love hip hop! When you think of hip hop as a culture there is always the graffiti element to it. I think music and art both come hand in hand, they have that creative element and can connect emotionally. They work very well together and I enjoy combining the two.
5. Myself, and many others, are fascinated in your unique style of art - can you tell us how you go about creating these incredible images, without giving away your secrets..?
I can tell you that I use a sharpie, some paper, and my macbook. I like using very expressive lines. They can often have a life of their own. I used to be very particular and like everything perfect but then one of my teachers introduced me to futurism and got me to express myself more through my drawing. That had a big effect on the way I work today.
6. Not many people will know this, but you're planning to move over to America to study in the near future - what is the reasoning behind this, and how will it further your career?
That's definitely something I'm seriously looking into. The reason being that through my artwork I have built up a number of great connections and friends overseas and I think if I was over there working in person with these people this would have a huge impact and be an amazing opportunity for me and my artwork.
7. Seeing as though first and foremost this is a music website - what songs/album have you been bumping over the past few months?
Travi$ Scott, Frank Ocean's Channel Orange, amazing album! Nas, Life Is Good, Chance The Rapper,10 day. The whole save money crew's latest music. Ro Ransom just dropped his latest mixtape Ransomnia. I'm loving Action Bronson's charisma at the minute and very excited for Jessie Ware's album, big fan of hers. And of course all of the latest G.O.O.D. Music.
8. And finally, what can we expect from Will Prince in the next 12 months?
Working on a few projects, album/mixtape art. A t-shirt collection. Hopefully just progressing and making this a business, a job. I'd really really like to get over to the USA. It would be cool to get a a showcase of my art going out here in England too.
