Hip-Hop Classic #1: Da Bush Babees - The Love Song (Feat. Mos Def) (Chosen by Thomas Coxhead)

'The Love Song' is the lead single and my favourite track from Da Bush Babees critically acclaimed sophmore album, Gravity, which was released in 1996 on Warner Bros. They are a group of underground Hip-Hop artists that were loosely affiliated with the Native Tongues - the members of the group are Babe-B-Face Kaos, Mister Man and Y-Tee. This track was produced by Posdnous of De La Soul and featured a then-unknown Mos Def singing the chorus, who also sang the chorus and rapped the third verse of the album's seventh track, S.O.S. Even though this basically kickstarted Mos Def's career, Warner Bros released Da Bush Babees from its contract after the album ran its course; Mr Man went on to change his nickname to Mr. Khaliyl and released a rare 12-inch single featuring Talib Kweli & Pharoahe Monch, and has produced for artists such as Res & Fabolous, but the group have never been seen together since '96. A classic Hip-Hop single, from a classic Hip-Hop album.
